Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The representation of women in leadership roles has been a subject of increasing global interest, as gender equality continues to be a significant factor in the political and social landscape. In Nigeria, women remain underrepresented in political offices, despite the important contributions they make in various sectors of society. Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State, like many other parts of Nigeria, is no exception. However, media, especially through television, radio, and social media, plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of women in leadership positions. Media portrayals can either reinforce gender stereotypes or challenge societal norms, influencing how women in leadership are viewed by the public. This study aims to investigate the influence of media on public perception of women in leadership positions in Bakori, exploring how media representations shape attitudes toward female political leaders and the barriers they face in achieving political office.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although there has been an increasing presence of women in leadership roles, societal perceptions often reflect traditional gender roles that limit the recognition and acceptance of women leaders. In Bakori, the media plays a crucial role in either reinforcing or challenging these perceptions. However, little is known about how media portrayals of women in leadership influence the local population’s perceptions of their capabilities and legitimacy in such roles. The media may either serve as a platform to challenge existing stereotypes or contribute to the marginalization of women in politics. This research will explore the impact of media representations of women in leadership positions in Bakori and how these representations shape public attitudes and the political opportunities available to women.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess how the media portrays women in leadership positions in Bakori Local Government Area.
  2. To examine the influence of media portrayals on public perception of women in leadership roles.
  3. To investigate the barriers women face in achieving leadership positions in Bakori, as shaped by media narratives.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does the media portray women in leadership roles in Bakori LGA?
  2. What impact do these media portrayals have on public perception of women in leadership positions?
  3. What are the key barriers women in Bakori face in attaining leadership roles, and how are these influenced by media portrayals?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Media portrayals of women in leadership roles significantly influence public perception of their suitability for such positions.
  2. Negative media portrayals of women in leadership contribute to societal reluctance to accept women in leadership roles in Bakori.
  3. Media can play a pivotal role in overcoming the barriers women face in achieving leadership roles in Bakori by positively representing them.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it will shed light on how media representations contribute to the advancement or hindrance of women’s participation in leadership roles in Bakori. Understanding the influence of media on public perception is crucial for developing strategies that can promote gender equality in leadership and political participation. The study will also contribute to the broader discussions on gender, media, and politics, offering insights that could inform media practices and policies aimed at improving the representation of women in leadership roles in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State, specifically examining media portrayals of women in leadership and their impact on public perception. It will not examine women’s leadership in other regions of Katsina or in non-political sectors. A limitation of the study is the reliance on media content analysis and surveys, which may not fully capture the complexity of media influence on public perception.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Media Portrayals: The representation and depiction of individuals, groups, or issues through various media platforms, such as television, radio, and print.
  2. Leadership: The act of leading a group, organization, or political entity, with the authority and responsibility to make decisions and direct actions.
  3. Public Perception: The general attitude, belief, or opinion held by the public about a particular issue or group, shaped by media, personal experience, and societal norms.
